Christmas Gift Card Holders

It is time for the new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog.  Sara Emily is our hostess for this one called It's A Wrap. Here is what she has to say about it:

Whenever I hear this term, I think of something that's finished or completed. But for this challenge, we want you to share your vintage or shabby chic gift wrapping, gift box or bag or perhaps a set of gift tags. Or maybe you might take a different approach and use a wrap die cut or gift packaging on your project -- just be sure to tell us what your 'wrap' is if it's not obvious!

When I saw this challenge I immediately knew that I needed to work on something for Christmas. Since there is zero chance I am going shopping at the mall during a pandemic, I will doing most of the shopping for Christmas online. I have Grandchildren that are at the age where they want to select their own gifts so I decided on gift card holders for this challenge. I normally take them shopping for their birthday, give them a budget and they pick their own presents and along with lunch out that Grandma buys, they walk away very happy. This year they got gift cards purchased online at stores where they like to shop in person but can shop online. It wasn't as much fun for me but it worked and I can see Christmas being much of the same although I do plan to ask their Mother for a shopping list of things I can buy online. I am getting quite proficient at hitting the SUBMIT button since I am buying everything online, including groceries right now.

I made a quartet of very simply decorated but different gift card holders. Since some e-gift cards can be cut into the shape of an normal gift card, a couple of the holders will accommodate that type but when you print from some sites, you have to fold the gift card so two of the holders are made with space to accommodate that type.

For all of the holders I used the Festive Greens and Holiday Greens die sets from Tim Holtz. If they are no longer available in the store I will link to suggested alternatives. Since I am on a mission to use up leftovers and scraps in my stash I also used leftovers from a couple of Graphic 45 Christmas paper pads that were in my stash along with some of the Metallic card stock pads from Tim Holtz.

• Cut a strip of card stock 4" wide x 8 1/2" long
• On the long side score at 2 1/2", 2 7/8", 5 7/8" and 6 1/4"
• Fold all score lines and burnish with bone folder
• Cut patterned paper to cover the back, front bottom and front top (I cut mine so it was 1/16" smaller on all four sides)
• Ink edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink
• Cut two pieces of card stock 1 3/8" wide x 2 3/8" long for the gussets
• Score on the short side at 1/2" and 5/8"
• Fold gussets and burnish with bone folder
• Adhere to the inside of the front bottom and back with double sided tape
• Add velcro fasteners or make a belly band to keep holder shut
• Decorate as desired - I just added a fussy cut element from the paper and a pair of die cut holly leaves with adhesive pearls

For the next one, I was inspired by a little double flip box that I found online HERE. I used the template shown on the blog but did my own measurements and actually messed up when I did the outside so the top isn't quite as flat as it should be. I will explain in the instructions.

• Cut one piece of card stock 5 5/8" x 4 3/8
• On the long side score at 1/2", 1", 4 5/8" and 5 1/8"
• Cut out sections and angle edges as shown on the template
• Fold to create box bottom
• Cut one piece of card stock 8 7/8" x 3 1/2"
• On long side score at 2", 2 1/2", 6 3/8" and 6 7/8" - the centre section needs to be at least 1/4" longer than the box bottom and I only added 1/8"
• Cut out sections and angle edges as shown on the template
• Fold to create double flip top
• Die cut a label for the closure
• Add magnets to right side of flip top and to back of the label closure
• Cut patterned paper for both sides of the flip top inside and out as well as the back of the label closure
• Adhere the box bottom to the inside bottom of the double flip top piece making sure it is centred
• Decorate as desired - I used the Festive Greens die set and Gold Metallic card stock

• Cut one piece of card stock 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" for base
• Cut patterned paper to fit base and ink edges with Vintage Photo DI
• Cut one piece of card stock 3" x 4 1/2" for a mat and centre over base
• Cut one piece of card stock 5 1/2" x 4 1/4"
• On long side score at 2 3/4" and fold like a card
• Dye a strip of seam binding with Antique Linen DI and attach to outside of folded card to act as a closure
• Adhere folded card to mat
• Cut three pieces of patterned paper to fit insides and the front, ink edges and adhere
• Fussy cut an element from the paper pad and add to inside as pocket
• Decorate inside and front

• Cut one piece of patterned paper 3 1/2" x 7 1/4"
• On long side score at 3 5/8"
• Cut a thumb notch at one end using a circle punch
• Fold and adhere with a narrow strip of double sided tape on each side
• Cut a piece of patterned paper 3 3/4" x 3"
• On short side score at 1 1/2" and fold
• Adhere the pocket section to the inside of the top and add Velcro closures
• Decorate as desired - I used a mixture of die cuts and plain and metallic card stock

Saturday Showcase at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog.

I am presenting the Saturday Showcase at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and here is a sneak peek at what I created..  Think small!

Stenciled Canvas

Today is the start of the new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog.  Jenny is our hostess for this one and she is calling it Stencilmania.  Here is how she describes it:

Stencils are such versatile tools - you can add colour through them, add texture and patterns with them, draw with them, emboss with them, print with them and so much more. So for this challenge we want you to get creative with your stencils, adding as many layers as you dare to create a vintage or shabby chic project to share with us all.

I thought it might be fun to make a mixed media canvas this time and here is how it came together.

I started with a round canvas that is 7 3/4" in diameter and was cut by my husband from the heavy chipboard that you find inside the vinyl covers of three ring binders - crafter's recycling at its finest.

Next I gave both sides a good coat of White Gesso (Dina Wakley) and then added some stenciling with Texture Paste (Ranger). I used the Bubble and Burlap stencils (Tim Holtz) and one I call Cracks that my husband made for me.

The canvas was covered with Aloe Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) and then using my ratty bristle brush I added some Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley).

I added lots of colour next using Burnt Orange and Roast Chestnut IZink Pigment Inks (Seth Apter) and Umber, Cheddar and Sedona Scribble Sticks(Dina Wakley)

Using a Sizzix Circles Die Set I cut a couple of circles from cracker boxes, coated them with White Gesso on the plain side and then painted the larger one with Umber Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) and the smaller one with Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley).

I wanted a bit of interest on the larger circle so I thought maybe I could get a wet or tone on tone pattern look by adding some Walnut Stain Distress Oxide (Tim Holtz) through the burlap stencil (Tim Holtz). It did look wet but wasn't very visible. I took my heat gun to it to set it and was surprised but happy to see the stenciling turn a lighter colour and pop against the dark brown.

The next step was to colour the butterfly, which is a die cut from the Tattered Butterflies set (Tim Holtz). I used the Burnt Orange and Roast Chestnut IZink Pigment Inks and then coloured the body with Umber Acrylic Paint.

Embellishments were prepared next. A strip of French Design Tape (Tim Holtz) was added to a piece of card stock. Some drywall tape was painted with Sand Acrylic Paint and a Small Talk Sticker (Tim Holtz) was inked with Antique Linen Distress Ink (Tim Holtz).

To assemble the canvas, I layered each circle on dimensional foam, and then added the butterfly to the top circle along with some thread. Each embellishment strip was added next and finally I removed the backs from some brads and added them to the drywall tape.

Shabby Floral Wedding Card

It is time for a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and this time Suzz is our hostess and is calling it With This Ring.  Here is how she describes it:

Summer is a traditional time for weddings. This year we have seen many of the celebrations become virtual, rescheduled or limited to few people participating. We as craft makers can still share our art with the happy couples by creating something beautiful to celebrate their special occasion. I challenge you to create something celebrating a wedding, it can be anything including: layout, card, decor, or gift.

I have created a shabby card with lots of flowers and two hearts that speaks to the romantic nature of a wedding.

I started with some paper from the Pretty Mosaics collection (Prima) and toned the colour down by using my ratty bristle brush to add some White Gesso. The panel was distressed on the edges and then added to my card blank.

The next panel was created by brushing Blushing and Carnation Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) onto a piece of white card stock.

Once the paint was dry, I added some stenciling with a Flourish stencil (Tim Holtz) and Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi). This was followed with some White Gesso to tone it down. It was still too bold for me so I crumpled up some white tissue paper (Dollarama), opened it back up and glued it over the panel, making sure to pat it down so it didn't tear while it was still wet. Finally I distressed the edges and layered it on top of the background panel.

Next I worked on the embellishments.  I covered a chipboard heart cut by my husband with White Gesso and then added some Texture Paste Crackle (Tim Holtz) using a stipple brush. When it was dry I painted the heart with Elephant Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) and then rubbed some Pearl Perfect Pearl (Ranger) over the heart to add some shimmer to the high areas.

The word love is a wooden piece my husband made for me and it also has been covered with the Texture Paste Crackle and White Gesso. The little heart charm came from my stash and has been coated with White Gesso and then sanded for an aged look. A string of teeny seed beads have been added to the charm. Both the charm and word were then added to the large heart, which was then adhered to the card.

A strip of venise lace was added near the bottom.  I used the Skeleton Leaves and the Garden Greens die sets (Tim Holtz) to cut some leaves from scraps of white shimmer card stock. Seam binding was dyed with Hickory Smoke Distress Ink (Tim Holtz) and created a loopy bow to which I added a pearl cluster.

To create the large white flower I tore a strip of sheer drapery fabric from my sewing stash,folded it in half on the long side and using a running stitch on the side opposite the fold I ruffled it forming it into a flower shape and then added a paper flower to the centre. The rest of the flowers are a variety of paper flowers singles from my stash that have been layered with either paper roses or adhesive pearls added to the centres.

I finished the inside of the card by creating a second panel exactly like the background panel and then added a white panel with a sentiment.

Christmas Card in July

It is time for a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and this time I am the hostess.  I am calling this one Christmas Cards in July and here is how I describe it:

If you are like me, you are anxious for 2020 to be over and done with. To speed things up let's pretend Christmas is around the corner even though it is only July and get a start on creating shabby chic or vintage inspired cards. This challenge is all about cards so please save other Christmas creations for later.

When I chose this theme I didn't realize that it would be appropriate for another reason. Where I live is is freaking hot right now and expected to be so until at least July 20th. When I say hot it is running about 93F - 95F every day with a humidex that is higher. Thinking Christmas helps to makes it feel a wee bit cooler - or maybe it is the air conditioning. 😄

This very shabby card was super easy to make and here is how I went about it:

I first found a freebie vintage image online and printed it.

Next I found a variety of papers I thought would compliment the photo.  For this card I used papers from the Flower Alphabet and Alchemy collections (Stamperia).  Don't be afraid to check out all your paper collections for papers that might work and not just Christmas themed papers.

Each panel of paper was heavily distressed on the edges and then I rubbed the edges with Old White Matte Wax (Prima).  Once that was dry I used a palette knife to spread some Distress Texture Paste Crackle (Tim Holtz) thickly in random spots on the edges.  This was done to each panel.

The next step was to grab some scraps of white card stock and cut a number of poinsettias and greens from the Holiday Greens and Festive Greens die sets (Tim Holtz).  Note:  I will link a substitute for the Festive Greens since I couldn't find that one in the store anymore.

Using a stencil brush I held the brush vertically and very lightly pounced some of the Distress Texture Paste onto all the poinsettia and greens pieces.  Because I did it so lightly, it didn't show a lot of cracking but gave it the desired texture.  If you click on the photo of the focal image to bring up a larger size, you should see the crackle on the bits I added to the edges.

The final step was to assemble the card.  I added the panels of paper first using some dimensional foam between the two large panels and also under the focal image.  Next I layered two of the poinsettia petals to make each flower and added them along with the greens.

Saturday Showcase at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog - Big Flower Tag

This week all the gals on the Design Team are sharing the Saturday Showcase at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and creating tags with a flower theme for your inspiration.

I have made a tag with a BIG pink flower and here is how to create one like it:

• Cover both sides of a large tag with White Gesso (Dina Wakley).

• With a cheap bristle brush add lots of rough brush strokes using Peacock, Tangerine, Lime, Lemon and Magenta Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley).

• Add markings in random areas using Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) and Border Lines and Faded Fragments stamp sets (Seth Apter) and #THMM101 set (Tim Holtz).

• In random areas add Crackled Texture Paste (Wendy Vecchi) through a Harlequin stencil (Tim Holtz)
• Once dry, replace the stencil and dry brush more Lime, Peacock and Magenta Acrylic Paint over top

• Using Jet Black Archival Ink, stamp the large flower from the Daisy Elegance set (AALL & Create) onto some card stock three times
• Fussy cut all three images and then remove a few outer petals from one of the images
• Ink both sides of each image with Picked Raspberry Distress Ink (Tim Holtz)
• Use a fine brush and Carnation Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) paint the inside of the petals on the smaller image

• Colour the centre of the smaller image with a White Gelly Roll pen (Sakura) followed by a Yellow Glaze Pen (Sakura)

• Ink the edges of the tag with Cracked Pistachio Distress Ink (Tim Holtz)
• Mount a Small Talk sticker (Tim Holtz) on a scrap of card stock, fussy cut and ink with Cracked Pistachio DI
• Dye a piece of seam binding with Picked Raspberry DI

• Use the Detailed Butterflies Mini die set (Tim Holtz) and cut a butterfly from scrap paper - I used some leftover paper that was made with Cracked Pistachio Distress Paint (Tim Holtz) on my gel plate
• Punch some tiny butterflies from more of that leftover paper
• Layer the three flower images using dimensional foam between the layers and add to the card
• Glue some little dewdrops on the flower
• Adhere the butterflies and then add the seam binding to the top

Cattywampus?

It is time for the new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and Sara Emily, who is our hostess for this challenge is calling it Cattywampus.  I am sure you are thinking what the heck is that so here is how she describes it:

Cattywampus is a funny sounding southern slag term I hear a lot around the house. According to the On Line Slang Dictionary it has several meanings including "appearing off center, diagonal from, crooked or not level, appearing askew, tilted or lopsided". Taking inspiration from any one of these definitions, include something cattywampus in your vintage or shabby chic project. Be sure to tell us what that cattywampus thing is; we might miss it!

I have a 13 year-old Granddaughter who is graduating from elementary school this week (albeit a virtual event because of the virus) so I thought I would make a card for her.  She takes after her Grandma and isn't into girly, girly things but loves more contemporary looks.  I loved the Alchemy paper collection from Stamperia and decided to use it for her card and include both frilly and industrial elements.

I started by distressing one panel of black patterned paper, inking the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink (Tim Holtz) and added it to a card blank.  Next I cut two more panels from different papers and cut the opposite corners on an angle.  Both were distressed and inked before they were adhered on top of the black panel.

I cut a narrow strip of yet another paper on a different angle than the two corners, distressed and inked it and added it to the bottom paper.  The different angles created on these three pieces of paper are part of my attempt at cattywampus.  Of course I then proceeded to cover most of it up.

The clock face was cut by my husband from a cracker box and I gave it a coat of White Gesso (Dina Wakley) and then tapped Versamark (Tsukineko) on it so it could be embossed with Aegean Sea Baked Velvet, Patina Oxide Baked Texture and Chunky Rust Baked Texture (Seth Apter).  An element from the paper collection was fussy cut and glued to the inside of the clock face.  I decided not to cover this element with clock hands.

A square element was fussy cut, distressed and inked and added on an angle - another example of cattywampus.  I chose this particular element because it describes my Granddaughter.  She is a competitive synchronized swimmer, bakes like a professional and has been accepted into the Advanced Visual Arts program for high school (one of 28 out of 70 applicants).  I am creative but can't draw at all or paint much but she is fantastic at both.  The key was altered with Versamark and Chunky Rust Baked Texture embossing powder.

I rubbed a bit of Old White Matte Wax (Prima Marketing) on the edges of the large turquoise flower and then all the flowers were inked with Vintage Photo DI  before they were added to the card.  Two are from the Pretty Mosaic sets (Prima Marketing) and the cream rose is from my stash.  I used the Garden Greens die set (Tim Holtz) and some Kraft Core Shattered paper (Tim Holtz) to make the leaves.

The bookmark from the paper collection was mounted on heavy card stock, fussy cut and dyed seam binding added to the top.  I had the seam binding in my stash and I think I used Tumbled Glass Distress Ink (Tim Holtz) to dye it but it was a while ago so don't hold me to that colour.

I added a distressed and inked panel of patterned paper on the inside and created a pocket to hold the bookmark and a gift card from the book store.

Love Words

It is time for the new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog. Suzz is the hostess for this one and calls it Positively Pensive.  Here is how she describes it:

Today is Ballpoint Pen day! The challenge is to thoughtfully use a ballpoint pen on your project. You can doodle, journal, sketch or trace an outline using any color ballpoint pen on your art. Create a vintage or shabby chic project with some form of ink from a ballpoint pen and if it isn't obvious how it was used make sure to tell us in your post!

I thought it would be fun for a change to do an art journal page and since it is June, which is traditionally wedding month (except in the middle of a pandemic) I chose wedding as the theme for this very neutral, vintage page.

I apologize for the lack of process photos but after close to 3 months in lock down, my mind has gone to mush and I simply forgot but here is how you can create a page like mine:

• Coat page with White Gesso (Dina Wakley)
• Cover page with Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley)
• Use a palette knife to add  Crackled Texture Paste (Wendy Vecchi) through the Flourish stencil (Tim Holtz) in random areas
• Using Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger) and a Harlequin stencil (Tim Holtz) add some stenciling
• Brush White Gesso over the page using a ratty old brush so you can see brush strokes
• Spray Gathered Twigs Distress Spray Stain over the page and blot some off with a paper towel
• Spray White Linen Ink Spray (Dylusions) on page
• Splatter White Gesso over page
• Cut leaves and branches from scraps of Kraft Core Shattered card stock (Tim Holtz) using the Garden Greens die set (Tim Holtz)
• Punch some flowers from the Printery and Vintage Emporium paper pads (Prima) and add flowers to the centres from the Wild & Free Collection (Prima)
• Hand cut a heart from white corrugated cardboard, coat with Sand Acrylic Paint and rub with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink (Tim Holtz)
• Adhere a piece of lace to the page followed by the wedding couple Paper Doll (Tim Holtz), the heart, a piece of ephemera (Tim Holtz), the leaves, flowers and buttons
• Hand print the text using a black ball point pen

Saturday Showcase at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog

I am presenting the Saturday Showcase at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog today and am featuring two of Seth Apter's new products - Izink Pigment and Izink Ice.  Check out the blog HERE for all the details.

Pretty in Pink

It is time for the new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and this time Maggi is our hostess and is calling it Tickled Pink.  Here is how she describes it:

Design a vintage or shabby chic project using the color pink. You may use other colors as accents, but, pink must be predominant. There are many shades of pink ranging from fuschia to soft baby pink so let your pink imagination go wild!

I thought it would be fun to make some wall decor for my project and use one of the MDF hearts that my handy hubby cut for me on his laser cutter.

I started by covering it with my go-to texture - tissue paper that has been wadded into a ball and then carefully opened up again.  Don't forget when you put the tissue over your glue that you just pat it down so it doesn't tear because the glue may quickly make it wet.

Next I gave it a coat of White Gesso Dina Wakley) for added strength and then when that was dry I covered it with Carnation Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley).  I decided it needed a bit of toning back so I randomly dry brushed a little more of the White Gesso over it.

Since the laser cutter was up and running I convinced my husband to cut me a louvered window and a couple of fancy flourishes from chipboard.  These pieces were coated with White Gesso and then some texture paste was scraped over the top.

Leaves were cut from some scraps of green card stock using the Garden Greens die set (Tim Holtz).  I used paper from the Love Story paper pad (Prima) to make all the butterflies.  The large butterfly is from a die called Detailed Butterflies, Mini (Tim Holtz) and the other two were punched with a Martha Stewart punch.  All three were inked with Spun Sugar Distress Ink (Tim Holtz) and then Blush Adhesive Pearls (Kaisercraft) were added to the bodies.

The flowers are primarily from the Pretty Mosaic collection (Prima) with a couple others from my stash (Wild Orchid Crafts).  I rubbed a little Old White Matte Wax (Prima) on the top layer of petals of the big pink flower.
