Layers at Sassy Cheryl's

I told my friends at Sassy Cheryl's that they should be careful not to fall on the floor because I have actually managed to get a card made for the current challenge at Sassy Cheryl's Challenge Blog , which is all about LOTS OF LAYERS.

I started a different card and coloured an image for the first time in probably 4 months but then I tried to get artsy and ruined the image so I had to scrap that effort and start again.  I was checking to see if I had anything else printed and found an image that was already coloured - bonus.  I had done it when I visited my friend Ann English last May and she let me use her Copics - not my usual medium but with her expert guidance I got something worth keeping.

From the bottom up, here is my card:

I started with some Recollections card stock for the blank (this card is a 6" square).  Next I added some green patterned paper from my stash for the background.  Next came a couple of Provo Craft papers (also from my scraps) and then a band of white card stock that was punched with a Martha Stewart edge punch.

I added three rows of ribbon from Michaels and some Recollections pearl stickers.  The flower is made up of a white Prima flower and a couple of coloured flowers from Dollarama.  I added a button from my stash and some baker's twine from Really Reasonable Ribbon.

Next I fussy cut around the image before adhering it.  Voila, lots of layers.  I decided not to add a sentiment because I am not sure how this card will be used. 

This is not my usual style of crafting since I normally do vintage or shabby chic so I struggled with this.  Even though I absolutely love these Sassy images, my pea brain can't seem to combine my style with her wonderful images.  I will keep trying though now that I have more time since I am officially retired again.

I don't know what this image is called and I can't find it in the Sassy Cheryl Stamp Store but that could be because I didn't look hard enough.  If it isn't there, not to worry because Cheryl has lots of other fabulous digis, including a set of twins that just arrived and are adorable.

Step Into Christmas

If you have read my blog lately you will know that I just returned on Tuesday night from a week in Maryland with the lovely Ann English.  I met Ann when we were both on the Phindy's Place DT  as well as through Sassy Cheryl's PCP group.  Before we left her house to head for the airport on Tuesday, I checked the challenge at Sassy Cheryl's and lo and behold Ann was the one who set the challenge this week (she keeps a secret well).  She wants us to create STEP CARDS so in between loads of laundry and ironing yesterday, I created this Christmas card.

I have never tried a side step card before so thought that might be fun to tackle.  It isn't difficult at all as long as you pay attention to where you are cutting, which I didn't the first time - dah.  The card base was made from Recollections card stock and the paper is from an old Provo Craft paper pad.  I raided my scrap bucket for the card stock to make the trees, which were hand cut, embossed with a Snowflake & Swiss Dots embossing folder from Cuttlebug and then dotted with a few pearl stickers from Recollections.

The sentiment is computer generated and the Sassy Cheryl's image was a freebie once upon a time.  The snowflake was cut using the Create A Flake Two die from Spellbinders.  The ribbon started out as Chalk White Hug Snug Seam Binding but I transformed it by dying it with Weathered Wood, Bundled Sage & Broken China Distress Ink from Ranger.  The edges of the image & sentiment were inked with the Bundled Sage Distress Ink.

Day Dreaming

I am in Chestertown, Maryland this week visiting a lovely crafting friend, Ann English and we have been playing in her well-appointed craft room.  We have also made some day trips - one to Winterthur, which is a du Pont home and gardens - fabulous.  The other trip was to some craft stores and then out for a super dinner.  I had wanted try crab cakes while I was here and got my wish - yummy.

We have played with my Gelli plate and while we need more practice, we did have fun.  Then she let me use her supplies and I made this card for the current challenge at Sassy Cheryl's, which calls for STITCHING.  I have never used a sewing machine to do my stitching so this was a first and it is certainly easier than hand stitching as I usually do.

The image is called Better Than a Thousand Words and can be found here.  The papers are all from My Mind's Eye and the card stock is all from Ann's stash as are the ribbon and the brads.  I also used a Martha Stewart lace edge punch and the flowers were made using a Martha Stewart punch and a McGill Craftivity punch.  The leaves were made with a Punch Bunch punch.

Sassy Flower

I got busy this morning and created a card for the new challenge over at Sassy Cheryl's.  The challenge asks that you use lace and handmade flowers on your card and of course, you must use a Sassy Cheryl image.

I made this card using all sorts of scraps from my craft supplies, including the yellow and purple card stock.  The background polka dot paper, the stripe and the big flower paper are all from Provo Craft and the little polka dot paper is from Making Memories.  I don't remember who made the the paper I used to make the flower.  I did the bottom layer with a 1" circle punch from Recollections following a tutorial I found here but then decided it needed another layer and that was cut using an EK Paper Shapers punch.  All the petals were inked with Wild Honey Distress Ink (Ranger).

The Sassy Cheryl image is called A Simple Gift of a Flower and was coloured with Prismacolors and blended with Gotrick OMS.  Then it was cut using the Labels 16 die from Spellbinders and inked with Milled Lavender Distress Ink (Ranger).  The lace is from my sewing closet and the button came from Fabricland.

Sassy Santa

If you read my blog regularly then you know I love to get a head start on Christmas cards and today I have one featuring one of Sassy Cheryl's wonderful Santas.  This one is called Delivery Boy Santa and I am not sure if it is still available from the Sassy Cheryl's store but if it isn't be sure to check out her other wonderful images.

I made the card blank from some Staples card stock and the papers are all scraps from my stash. The image was cut with the Spellbinders Label One Nestabilities die, coloured with Prismacolors that were blended with Gotrick OMS and then I added some Mungyo chalk to the edges.

I found the ribbon a while back in a bag from White Rose but since they closed their doors 10 years ago, you know how old it is.  I pulled the centre thread to ruffle it and then added a charm from Arton Beads.  The little buttons are from Dress It Up.

A Sassy Sketch

I get to play in Sassy Cheryl's challenge this week - woo hoo - not something I can do as often as I would like!  The challenge is to use the sketch provided and I decided to flip mine for a wee bit of interest. 

I am visiting at my Sassy friend Shirley's house in Mississippi and she has been teaching me about the Silhouette Cameo so I laid out my card with the it even printing and cutting this little girl using the Cameo. - so easy.

This card is a little different for me because it is a lot more clean and simple than what I normally do and I didn't manage the scale as well as I should have but it was fun to do and you have to love this little girl

Shirley is a whiz at this machine and I have learned so much from her this week.  We even did some image designing together - two heads are better than one sometimes. Now there is no excuse when I go home, I better be using my Cameo to do more. 

When we weren't crafting we walked, watched some TV, chatted up a storm, laughed a lot and ate yummy food.  All in all a great time and I am so glad I got to come for a visit - Shirley has been a lovely hostess.

The Mailman

I wanted to play in the challenge at Sassy Cheryl's this week because I haven't been able to for some time . Since the challenge was called With Love and they want you to use a heart, I dug out this image from the Sassy Cheryl's shop that I have had for ages but had never used.  Either she is really happy to see the mailman because he is bringing something special or he is the something special.

The hearts were cut with my Cameo and next week I am off to visit with a lovely crafting friend in Mississippi and she is a Cameo whiz so I hope to start doing lots of great cuts when I return because I am going to get one on one lessons.

Three Funny Snowmen

I didn't get enough Christmas cards made in 2012 and was scrambling at the end so this year I decided to start early and maybe if I keep plugging away, I will actually make it.  My other goal is to make every card flat enough that it only requires regular postage, which is going up to 63 cents here in Canada - ouch.

I haven't had time to play in Sassy Cheryl's challenges for ages but decided I would use one of my newly purchased images and participate this week.  The challenge is Anything Goes (as long as you use a Sassy Cheryl image) so I am sure a Christmas card will qualify.

I also used my new Cameo to cut the snowflake but I really need to spend more time figuring out what blade depth and speed I need for the type of material I am using because it did not go as well as I hoped and I wasted some material.  I know once I figure it out, I will love the machine.

Sassy Cheryl's 100th Challenge

Sassy Cheryl's Challenge Blog has reached a milestone - 100 challenges - and I decided to join the party. I couldn't imagine a better image to use than Sassy Sally because she's already in the party mood.  The challenge there is Punches & Shimmer.  I know you can easily see the punches and trust me when I tell you there is also shimmer but no matter how hard I tried, I could not get it to come up in the photo so I have added some sparkle brushes to show where some of it is.  The pompom on the top of her head and all the confetti has been coloured with a Copper Gel Pen, the dots on her skirt have been coloured with an Iridescent Gel Pen and I added a Clear Gel Pen over the paper streamers.  In real life there are lots of shimmery spots.

Skating

This week the challenge at Sassy Cheryl's is to use the sketch provided and make a card featuring snow. I bought this new stamp from Sassy Cheryl's shop over the Christmas holidays with a Secret Santa gift and thought it would be perfect. I also thought the timing was great since my husband is taking our five year-old Granddaughter ice skating this afternoon.  She started to learn last winter and has been itching to get back at it.  She is a stubborn little one and wants to practice so she can master it.  She has also decided she should put her own ponytails in and worked at it for about 10 minutes the other day.  There was no way she would let Grandma help her.  She finally got one ponytail in but it had a bump so she pulled the elastic out and declared she was having "plain hair" that day.

Show Me Thursday

I have never participated in Show Me Thursday at Sassy Cheryl's blog but I am going to show you my desk today. Now, those of you who chat at Sassy Cheryl's PCP group know that I have been making a little red velvet skirt for my 5 year-old Granddaughter and she chose the fabric.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT let a 5 year-old choose fabric because if the fabric is velvet you must be prepared to curse, cry and vacuum a lot. The only up side of this is that after Christmas, the little red bits are my daughter's problem but chances are good that I will hear about it.

In order to try to minimize the mess, this skirt has two sets of seam binding on the hem and I have zigzagged all the edges I couldn't cover with seam binding. This is not my best job but my Granddaughter will love it and grow out of it in no time so I am not going to stress about that part.

Now all I have to do is get this into a box with the pink tights and the red and pink sweater I bought her in England when I was there in September. Oh yes and I have to hope that it fits because if it doesn't, I am not making another one in velvet.

Since she is asking Santa for Barbie dolls for Christmas, I have decided that my sewing machine is actually broken so that I don't have to make itty bitty Barbie clothes. I suspect that I would have to put a long straw in the scotch bottle if forced to sew those.

My next project is to make cookies but I won't be showing you those because they have to go right in the freezer so I am not tempted to eat them. Cookies are lovely morsels but they are 20 seconds in the mouth and 20 years on the hips :)

Birth of a King

The last few days have been so stressful. Last Thursday my computer started acting up and I had viruses and spyware - despite my care about not opening things. So this weekend, my wonderful husband spent 6 hours reformatting my computer and reloading programs. Talk about a major pain. There are still a few things to do but at least I can work with it now. I really do not understand why people need to be so malicious just to prove how smart they think they are. They could put all those smarts to some good use and we would love them and not hate them.

Anyway, I managed to quickly get a card done this morning for the challenge at Sassy Cheryl's but I apologize for the photo. It is so dreary here today and I really didn't have time to move lights. The theme is WINTER so I dug out this adorable snow family image and made a Christmas card. Now I better concentrate on getting the cards in the mail so no more crafting for a couple of days.

The title of this post should really be Father Christmas - Take 2. I made this card a few days ago and once I saw it finished, I didn't like it so I remade it. I know I am my own worst critic but this time I was right.

Helpful Elves

I just picked up some new images from Sassy Cheryl's so I thought I better put at least one to good use and make something for their current challenge. Since I am on a mission to get my Christmas cards all made before the end of November, that is what I made and of course it is very flat so it can be mailed without requiring me to float a loan for postage. I have said this before and I will say it again, I really do prefer a bit more embellishment so these cards seem almost naked.

I don't usually wish Christmas was tomorrow but I have asked my husband to make me a photo booth for Christmas and given the horrible photo I got for this card, then Christmas can't happen too soon. Sorry about the quality.

Apartment Building

I wanted to make a card for fun this week so I decided to play in Sassy Cheryl's challenge. The challenges are all about pink this month and this one adds a sketch.

Now, I must admit that I am not a fan of sketches because I never seem to be able to do them justice.  I know, I'm weird but I actually find them harder to work with when they should make it easy.  After I finished the card I realized that this will be a great sketch for Christmas cards since they call for clean and simple or you have to float a loan for the postage (remember my story about last year).

Sassy Cheryl draws such fun images and I thought I could use this one for all sorts of occasions. It reminds me of an apartment building for birds. What a great place to hang out.

A Sassy Bear

This week the challenge at Sassy Cheryl's is to use Lavender, Green and White and I decided to play along because I love this colour combination.

This card was made for Sassy Cheryl to send to a special young man who was paralyzed in a diving accident recently.  My thoughts and prayers go to him and his family as he progresses through a lengthy period of rehabilitation so I thought this little bear might bring some cheer.

A Sassy Christmas Card

As I have mentioned, I am on a mission to make as many Christmas cards as I can before December. Since I got really carried away with embellishments last year and they ended up forcing the cost of postage through the roof, my cards this year are going to be more clean and simple. That should make my husband a lot happier since he was the one who paid for all that extra postage and had to stand there and put the stamps on each envelope.

This week the challenge at Sassy Cheryl's is to make a tent card so I used this opportunity to use one of her images I had bought some time ago.
