Sew Sweet

The new challenge begins today at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and I am the hostess for this one.  I am calling it Sew Sweet and here is what I have to say about it:

Create a shabby chic or vintage project with a sewing theme incorporating items and/or images related to sewing - think rubber stamps of sewing machines or dress forms e.g., fabric, pattern tissue and even notions such as buttons, zippers, thread, etc.

I have created a little mini album full of lots of sewing images and notions.  I used the Stamperia Old Lace paper collection along with a few pieces of paper from the Tim Holtz Dapper pad and my scrap stash.  The album measures 4 1/4" x 5" with a 1" spine.  When I first made it the spine was only 1/2" and it would not close properly so I performed surgery on it and expanded it - holding my breath the whole time since it was already decorated.

The front was decorated with some ruler paper, image from the paper collection, stamped sign, layered flower, buttons, metal hanger, lace and a little pair of metal scissors.  All the paper and card stock used both inside and outside has been distressed and inked with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink.

When you untie the ribbon closure I added you will see a single flip out on the left and an accordion flip out on the right

The left has a tuck spot decorated with lace that hold two cards that could be used for journaling or as photo mounts.  One card is covered with patterned paper and one with pattern tissue.  The right has a ruler belly band that holds two folded cards.  The images on the cards came from a vintage catalogue from J. Rotherham & Co. Ltd. that I found online at archive.org.

When the left flip-out is opened there are two pages with pockets.  The one on the left (back of the flip-out) is decorated with some lace dyed with Antique Linen Distress Ink and contains three cards, two of which have patterned paper and one is a quote I found online.

The right pocket is decorated with a stamped image and contains a little needle book, which has felt inserts.

When the right flip-out is opened there is a centre panel with a flip-up and a flip-down using magnets to ensure they stay closed.  The flip up is decorated with a ribbon holder and has patterned paper on the back for using as a photo mount.  The flip-down can also be used for photos.  Inside this section is a belly band with two tags cut from the paper collection.

To the right of this section is a pocket page containing a notions book that has been created in the same way as the needle book.

The back of the right flip-out has a tuck spot decorated with some vintage sewing tickets and contains another quote card (upside down in the top photo - dah)..

The right side is another pocket page and it holds a vintage button card.

I imagined  this little album would be used to hold information and photos of some favourite sewing projects both as work in process or once finished.  I hope you will join us for the challenge.

The challenge runs through 11:55 pm on Tuesday, May 12th and you have a chance to be the randomly chosen winner of a gift certificate to shop at The Funkie Junkie Boutique or you could be one of the top picks chosen by the Design Team.  The overall pick will receive an opportunity to be a Guest Designer at a future date.

Create Love

Today is the start of a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog.  Sara Emily, our hostess for this one is calling it A Mother's Love.  Here is how she describes it:

A mother's love can mean so many different things to different people. With this challenge I invite you to take some time to reflect on what it means for you and create a vintage or shabby chic project for your mother or a special woman in your life to let them know how much you love them. Be sure your project has the word "love" somewhere on it where it will be noticed.

Sadly my Mom passed away 27 years ago but I can still honour her with this project because it speaks to something she loved to do and passed on to me - creativity.  In turn I have passed the "creativity gene" on to to my Daughter and she has passed it on to her Daughter.  My Mom did all sorts of fiber crafts (petit point, smocking, knitting to name a few) but she also painted and once I was in the dentist's chair and commented that the paintings on the ceiling looked like something my Mom would do and he said that she did.  Apparently she got bored counting the little holes in the ceiling tiles so she brought him some art.

In addition to what you have seen me do, I too have done some fiber crafts however the ability to draw skipped me but both my Daughter and Granddaughter have it and both can look at something really tiny and draw it really large and it will be perfectly to scale.  My Granddaughter paints and just auditioned for the Advanced Visual Arts program in high school.  She was accepted so next year when she starts high school she will have the opportunity to take a number of great arts courses in addition to lots of maths and sciences, which she will need in order to earn money.

Considering what we are all experiencing right now, I am sure you will understand when I tell you that I don't focus well these days so there are no process photos.  I will explain how this came together and since I have done a similar project before HERE is a link to the post so you can see some process photos.
  • Cover an 8" x 10" canvas with tissue paper that was crumpled up tightly and then carefully opened back up, making sure to pat it down rather than rub it on so it doesn't tear
  • Glue a panel of burlap to the centre of the canvas
  • Adhere a variety of elements around an old paint brush (metal & paper flowers, lace, charms, buttons, wooden shapes and text, gems, filigree shapes)
  • Cover everything with a coat of white gesso (Dina Wakley) and when dry add a coat of Blackberry Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley)
  • Spray the canvas with Milled Lavender Distress Spray Stain (Tim Holtz), Violicious Violet Moonshadow Mist (Lindy's) and Crushed Grape Spray Ink (Dylusions)
  • Add some watered down Rosy Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) randomly over the canvas
  • Rub some Amethyst Magic Art Brilliance and Rose Gold Metallique (Prima) wax pastes over all the raised areas
This is such an easy way to create a fun canvas so I hope you will give it a try.  By the way, in case you are wondering if the colour purple has any significance, well sort of.  My Mom loved blue but I have done so many projects in blue that I wanted something different this time.  I don't really have a favourite colur and I don't know what my Daughter's is so I went with one of my Granddaughter's - at least I think it is because she decorated her room in purple, grey and white but she is 13 so things change at warp speed. 😀

The challenge runs through 11:55 pm EST on Tuesday, April 28th and one randomly chosen entrant will receive a gift certificate to shop at The Funkie Junkie Boutique while the Design Team will choose their top picks and the overall winner will receive an opportunity to be a Guest Designer at a future date.

Smell the Rain

It is time for the next challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and this time Maggi is our hostess.  She is calling it April Showers Bring May Flowers and here is how she describes it:

Design a vintage or shabby chic project that incorporates a wet "something" with flowers. Examples: Stenciled or doodled raindrops, water distressed or crumpled paper, Tim Holtz's Umbrella Man, you get the idea, just have something that represents wet. Then, add some flowers to your project.

I used the big flower from the Funky Flower Art set from Wendy Vecchi and made this funky and really gaudy tag. The tag that was originally in my head did not look like this but I got a lot carried away and this is the result. It is busy but the colours are pretty happy and we need happy right now.

I started with a 3 1/2" x 7" tag that was cut from mat board by my husband but I will link the tag section in Linda's store because there are many types and sizes to choose from.

I added a variety of Distress Oxides (Tim Holtz) to the tag making sure to dry between each colour.

Next I coated it with some Distress Collage Medium - Crazing (Tim Holtz) to try to provide a bit of a barrier before I did the next step.  Unfortunately my medium had gotten hard so I attempted to recover it by adding a bit of water and putting it in the microwave for a minute.  This helped but not enough so while it added some interesting texture, it did not provide a resist and removed some of the colour I had already laid down - disappointing but not the end of the world since it was actually lighter than I was going for anyway.

I added Translucent Embossing Paste (Wendy Vecchi) through a Raindrops Stencil I had picked up in England last year.  Mermaid Lagoon and Tumbled Glass Distress Spray Stains were added next to beef up the colour - and boy did I.

The floral was stamped twice on Watercolour Paper using Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger) and then fussy cut.

Both images were coloured with Cheddar, Tangerine, Olive and Evergreen Scribble Sticks (Dina Wakley)

Distress Oxides were used to dye a piece of lace and Distress Collage Medium - Vintage (Tim Holtz) was used to coat a torn piece of old book paper and a piece of burlap to age and stiffen them.

To assemble the tag, I adhered the old book paper, the lace topped with the burlap to which I added a strip of ribbon from my stash.  The floral was added with dimensional foam between the layers followed by a punched butterfly and a computer-generated sentiment.  Finally I added some buttons and a ribbon topper.

I hope you use some of your time at home to create and join us for the challenge.  It runs through 11:55 pm EST on Tuesday, April 14th.  The Design Team will choose their top picks and the overall winner will receive an opportunity to be a Guest Designer at a future date.  In addition, one randomly chosen entry will receive a gift certificate to shop at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.
