Mug Shot & Guest Designer Spot

Last week I was selected as a top pick at Raise the Bar Challenge and was asked to be a Guest Designer.  The challenge this week is called Mug Shot.  Since winter is almost gone (we wish), the challenge is to make a card showing that last mug of something hot that is needed to keep you warm.  Soon the weather will be nice and we will be drinking long cool drinks on the patio.

I decided to let this fun mug be the star of this card and go clean and simple.  For someone who loves to embellish, that was a bit difficult for me but I like the way it turned out.

Last Card for Isabella

Sadly, today is the last challenge for Isabella's Sketchbook Challenge Blog.  Isabella has some family health issues that have prevented her from drawing lately.  As her family is and should be her first priority, she has decided to suspend the design team after this challenge and shut down the challenge blog.  She will however, be keeping her store open so I hope you will support her by picking up some of her wonderful images and using them in other challenges.

I feel honoured to have been selected by Isabella to be on this design team and thank her from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity to expand my creativity.  My thoughts and prayers go out to Isabella and her family.

I also feel honoured to have been in the company of the talented ladies who served with me on the design team and thank them for all they have given to me over the past few months.  We have become online friends and will stay such, I am sure.

Our last challenge to you is to create a card with flowers you have made yourself.  They can be punched, fabric, crochet, or whatever you can dream up.  You must use one of Isabella's images on your project but there are so many to choose from in her store that you shouldn't have any trouble finding something suitable.  Just because this is the last challenge, please don't let that stop you from showing us your creativity.  You stand a chance to win two images of your choice from Isabella's store.  Don't forget to check the work of the other team members and be prepared to be inspired in a big way.

Christmas Bird

The challenge this week at Isabella's Sketchbook is to make a card with something hidden.  I struggled with this because I had all sorts of ideas but for the longest time nothing wanted to stay hidden - things kept popping open.  Finally I decided to hide a message behind the image and once I figured out how to hide it and allow it to be pulled out but not let it fall out I was a happy camper.

Use Those Scraps

I don't know about you but my stash of bits and pieces of paper and card stock seems to be multiplying in the cupboard.  Fortunately the challenge this week at Isabella's Challenge is to use nothing but stuff that you have in your scraps.  Except for the card blank, nothing can be any larger than 3"x3" or the equivalent in sq. inches, which is nine (9).  Any embellishments must also be in your stash and you can't go out and buy anything new.  Don't forget, you need to have an image from Isabella's Sketchbook on your project.  Oh, and by the way you will want to check out the work of the other members of the Design Team and be prepared to be inspired.

The Way to a Man's Heart

The challenge this week at Isabella's Sketchbook is an easy one, buttons and bows.  You can add one of each or a bunch of each but remember that your project must have an Isabella image.  If you don't have one or would like a new one, drop in to her store and get something so you can participate in this challenge.  Make sure you check all the fabulous work done by the rest of the design team.  You will be truly inspired.

I decided I would use one of each, especially after I found this fabulous checked button at my local fabric store.  It was a bit expensive but I used my member's card and got a bit of a discount because I just could not resist it.

If this little cutie had blond hair, it would be my granddaughter.  She loves to help bake and cook and is often grabbing her stool so she can be part of the action.  My daughter always liked to help me so it doesn't surprise me to see my granddaughter following in her footsteps.

Chill Out

Our challenge to you this week at Isabella's Sketchbook is to create a project using cool blues and greens.  I picked these terrific papers but when it came time to colour my flowers, I decided I couldn't do them justice in blue so I picked the deep pink in the background paper and decided to run with that.  You don't see the deep pink - well look very closely at the little tiny squares that run across the paper just above the bow -  I know it is a stretch!

Tea for Three

Our challenge to you this week at Isabella's Sketchbook Challenge is to "cut it out" and use 3D, paper tole or decoupage on your project.  You must use a digital stamp from Isabella's Sketchbook on your project.  If you don't have one (or want a few new ones), Isabella is having a sale today.  For today only, Wednesday, July 21st all digital stamps at Isabella's store are only $2.00 each.

I tried something new this time and created my own tea bag holder card.  I am a little unhappy with the inside because it didn't need to be quite as deep as I made it but I will try it again.  Each one of the cups has been popped up a little higher than the one above it with foam dots, which is where the 3D aspect of my card can be found.

Honouring Father

Sketch for Isabella

As I mentioned earlier, I am away this week and won't be able to approve your comments until my return on June 12th but please feel free to leave them because I enjoy reading them very much.

This week at Isabella's Challenge we have been asked to follow a sketch and here is my project.  I was having trouble with camera so it may be a little difficult to see that the wide ribbon is a very dark brown.  While I love this colour combination, I must admit that I really wanted to see what brown pearls on the pink scalloped oval to provide a bit of contrast would look like, but I couldn't find any in the only local craft store I have and there wasn't time to order them from an online store.  If you think they would have added something to the design, close your eyes and pretend they are there and then let me know what you think.

Remember

The challenge this week at Isabella's Sketchbook is to do something in the colours of our country (in my case, red and white) with a Memorial Day theme.

In the United States, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer so that usually brings to mind cookouts or picnics, going to the beach, relaxing with family and friends or spending time in the garden.  However, when I looked up the meaning of Memorial Day, I discovered that it is the day to honour and remember those men and women that have lost their lives in the service of their country.  I decided that even though Canada does that on November 11th each year, I was going to go with the true meaning of Memorial Day rather than making anything related to summer.

When a Canadian soldier dies in Afghanistan, their body is brought to Trenton Air Base in Ontario, which is about an hour east of where I live.  The body is then transported in a motorcade, which includes his or her family along the main highway to Toronto.  The section of the highway from Trenton to Toronto has officially been named Highway of Heroes.  It is always announced which day the soldier will be brought home and the motorcade always travels at the same time so people line the overpasses with their flags to pay respect to the soldier.  There is always at least one police car, ambulance and fire truck with lights flashing and the first responders standing on the vehicle to salute as the motorcade passes.  Ordinary people traveling the highway at the same time drop back so as not to interfere with the motorcade and people trying to enter the highway at any interchange wait until it passes.  This happens in the warm sunshine, the pouring rain, a snow storm and when the temperatures are well below freezing.

I have included a verse inside and while the colours are not those usually thought of for a sympathy card, certainly the beautiful image and the sentiments are appropriate and could be used as such.

Death leaves a heartache

no one can heal,

love leaves a memory

no one can steal.

Birthday Wishes

It is time for another challenge at Isabella's Sketchbook and this week it is Birthdays.  That is one kind of card you can never have enough on hand at all times of the year.  I decided to make a very feminine card and I think I have just the person to send it to.  I guess I will have to make a box because I doubt that it will fit in an envelope and even if it does, the post office will probably refuse to take it because it is so dimensional.  Don't they understand that crafters like us do dimension most of the time?

In Honour of Mother

It is time for another challenge at Isabella's Sketchbook Challenges and this week you are asked to make something in honour of Mother.   You have a week to create your project so make sure you come over to share it with us and be in the running to win two of Isabella's wonderful digi images.

In Canada and the US, this Sunday is Mother's Day and even though Mother's Day has already come and gone in the UK and other countries, making a card for that very special person in your life can (and should) be done at any time.

I am fortunate to still have my 88 year-old Mother-in-Law in my life but sadly my own Mother passed away 18 years ago.  She was very creative and would love the cards I am making and would probably be offering suggestions on how to improve them :)  Since my Mother is gone, I decided to make this card to honour a different Mother, my daughter.  She has two little people and she is an awesome Mother, which surprises me slightly because as a child she did not like to play with dolls.  In addition to the sentiment on the outside, I added the following verse inside:

The joy of watching you

grow into motherhood

has been such a blessing,

and seeing you

with your own children

brings more pride

than you could know.

The image from Isabella's Sketchbook is called Loving Guardian and has been coloured with a combination of Prismacolor and Koh-I-Noor pencil crayons.  The papers are from scrap packs but since I took the packs apart, I am sorry that I do not have the designer information.  The card stock is Georgia Pacific from a local office supply store.  The sentiment is computer generated.  Other supplies used:  Butterfly Punches (Martha Stewart and Marvy Uchida), Branch and Leaf Punches (Martha Stewart), Corner Embossing Punch (No name bargain from Ecstasy Crafts), Flowers (Bridal Supply Store), Wire (Artistic Wire), Pearl Stickers (Recollections from Michaels), Stickles (Ranger) and Craft Candy (Craftwork Cards).
