December Sketch at Sugar Creek Hollow

This week at Sugar Creek Hollow, we have a wonderful sketch to challenge you with. I love this sketch because you can make a card that can be dressed up and fancy or even clean and simple.  If you are like me and have a pile of holiday cards yet to make, this sketch will be very helpful when I have to go into mass production mode. 

In the meantime, I have used this very special stamp set called Baby Jesus from the Sugar Creek Hollow store to make my take on the sketch.

I changed the colour of Baby Jesus from black & white to sepia and cut him out using my classic oval Nestabilities die and sponged some Vintage Photo Distress Ink on the edges.  I then cut two more ovals to frame him.  The sentiment scroll was hand cut and then added to a Nestabilities tag.  I added lots of pearls to the frame and a couple to the tag.  The gorgeous linen paper at the top is some that I picked up in England and the bottom is card stock that I embossed and sponged with Vintage Photo Distress ink.  I added two rows of lace back to back with a piece of copper satin ribbon.

Under the Weather

I think I should be sending this card to myself. I have been suffering from a pinched nerve for over a week and it is getting old already. I can only sit for short periods of time and have a really numb lower leg so walking feels odd. I have lots of meds and an appointment for physiotherapy so hopefully by this time next week, I will be feeling much better. I have so much to do with Christmas coming and don't have time to be sick.

Holiday Cards at WhoopsiDaisy

The challenge this week at WhoopsiDaisy is to make Holiday Cards.  I decided to use this sweet image of two little ones fast asleep in front of the fireplace.  I can't help but wondering if they are standing guard to get a glimpse of Santa or if he has come and gone and they are tuckered out from the activities and excitement of the day.

I decided to make this card in traditional colours and while I didn't put a sentiment on the outside, there is a Christmas greeting on the inside.  I have made so many cards for the holidays lately but I still need to take an inventory so I know just how many more I have to do.  It is hard to believe how soon Christmas will be upon  us.

Victorian Sleigh Ride

 

This week the challenge on Sensational Saturdays at Sugar Creek Hollow is to use a winter stamp.  This Season's Greetings sentiment from Sugar Creek Hollow made me think Victorian Christmas and since I hadn't used it before I really wanted to work with it.

After I had finished this card, we were given the opportunity to use a very special new image called Baby Jesus with a lovely sentiment scroll to go with it.  Regrettably I didn't have time to make a card with these fantastic images but most of the other designers did use Baby Jesus on their cards so have a look at their work and be prepared to be blown away.  These two new images are available today in the Sugar Creek Hollow store.

Now a bit about my card - I found the vintage postcard online and inked the edges of it and the edges of the stamp with Vintage Photo distress ink.  The light standard has been coloured with Prismacolor pencil crayons.  The Poinsettia was made from two different sized Creatables dies from Marianne Designs using my Cuttlebug.  The embossed veins were brushed with gold and copper ink from Martha Stewart and then I added some large copper seed beads leftover from the days when I was decorating bathing suits for my daughter to wear in her synchronized swimming competitions.  A bit of crocheted lace, some pearl stickers and some pleated satin ribbon finished it off.

A New Sketch for Phindy's Place

Our challenge to you this week at Phindy's Friday Challenge Blog is to take one of your Phindy images and create a card based on this sketch.  Every week there is a randomly chosen winner along with one card chosen by the design team as card of the week.  The creator of that card is in the running for a chance to be a Guest Designer.

If the baby's sleeper didn't have ruffles it could have been a boy and then these two little cuties would have looked like my grandchildren.  The only difference is that my little guy won't sit long enough for his sister to tell him a story (she is just learning to read).  If they are in that close proximity they are usually poking at one another and then giggling like crazy.  Thankfully he does sit calmly when he is read to at night before bed.

Anytime Easel Card

The challenge this week at WhoopsiDaisy Challenges is to make Anytime Easel cards.  I love making easel cards because of all the fancy fold cards they are one of the easiest.  If you haven't made one just Google a tutorial and loads of them will pop up.  You might have to put a little note with the card to let people know how to display it because it appears that they have no idea, which surprises me because it looks pretty obvious to me.

Colour Challenge at Sugar Creek Hollow

Welcome to Sensational Saturdays at Sugar Creek Hollow.  This week we have a colour challenge for you over at the challenge blog and we want you to use these colours in a shabby chic card. 

The colours don't have names but have been interpreted as Light Blue, Kraft, Chocolate and Light Pink.  Make sure you check the work of the other design team members and then show us your interpretation of this colour challenge.  One winner will be chosen to receive a free digi stamp from the Sugar Creek Hollow store.

I had already decided I wanted to use this image from Sugar Creek Hollow called Christ is Born so this is really a Christmas card in non-traditional colours but I am sure at least one of my friends will appreciate that I have gone out of the box.

I have cut the image using my Label 1 Nestabilities die and then I used the same die in the next two sizes to cut a mottled blue piece and a kraft piece.  The kraft piece has been embossed and then sponged with Pearlescent Orchid ink and the same ink was applied to a paper flower that I picked up at a flower and craft wholesale supply house when I was in England on vacation.  The branches have been cut using my Cricut and Make the Cut software.  I have done a bit of distressing, added some crochet lace, a loopy bow and a button with a gem along with three more gems in the corner to finish it off.

Fall Shorts

I used to work with a fellow who started wearing his shorts in May and would not give them up until late November no matter what the weather was like.  When I saw the challenge to make fall cards at Sassy Cheryl's, I decided this image would make a great card and then the sentiment popped into my so I just had to make it.  I haven't seen my former co-worker in a couple of years but I bet if I sent the card to him, he would get a chuckle out of it.

News From Digital Delights

There is lots happening this week at Digital Delights by Louby Loo.  On Wednesday, there will be two new mini releases.  Here is a sneak peak at both of them.  One set is called Gingerbread Holiday and the other is Musical Angels.  Both are absolutely perfect for making your holiday cards so check the store on Wednesday and pick them up.

Christmas for WhoopsiDaisy

November Sketch for Sugar Creek Hollow & Fun Blog Hop

This week we have a sketch challenge for you over at Sugar Creek Hollow.  While I have followed the sketch, I have chosen to make a square card.  I have heard that it is more expensive to mail a square card in the US but not here in Canada.  We are fortunate because our restrictions are based on weight, size and thickness although the base price is higher than in the US.

I was fortunate to receive the lovely crinkly ribbon from the owner of Sugar Creek Hollow (she sells gorgeous colours in her store) and I was so happy that I could use it for this card.  I also changed the colour of the image to match the background paper.  I think I am going to have include some tools for taking my photos that will help with the colour on my Christmas wish list because that gem in the middle is an iridescent turquoise but the way my light caught it you would think it is almost royal blue.  While these may not be traditional Christmas colours, I have included a Christmas message inside and am sending it to one of my friends.

A Recipe for Phindy

Today we have a simple recipe challenge for you at Phindy's Friday Challenge Blog called 3-2-1.  The best part of this recipe is that you get to decide what you will use for each ingredient.  For my card, I used three brads, two ribbons and one patterned paper.  I also made a really simple card this week because I didn't think this image needed a pile of embellishments.

Christmas Morning

 

It is Thursday and we have another challenge for you at Delightful Challenges.  This week we would like to see stitching on your card - real or faux.  I have to admit that I had the card all glued down and then realized I hadn't done any stitching (first the hearing, then the memory and now the eyesight - lol) so this time I have gone with faux stitching.  I must admit I like the look of my hand stitching but this was certainly less time consuming.   I decided to create a simpler card this time and give it a bit of a country look so the faux stitching tied right in.  This cute little guy is one of the new release stamps for November.  Check out the store for more new stamps.

Lovely Lace

Wow, it is Saturday finally.  I thought this day would never come because I had my grandchildren here all week.  A four year old and a 19 month old sure can keep you moving but now they have gone home and I can get some rest and do some crafting.  I think they have given me a cold and when I told my granddaughter that she had given me a present I didn't really want she informed me that the only way she wouldn't be able to give it to me was to stay away from me but then she wouldn't be able to give me kisses and hugs - lol.

All About Circles

Today our challenge to you ate Delightful Challenges is called Round & Round - Use Lots of Circles.  I think I have accomplished that with the big circle, circles on the ribbon, circles on the paper and the round dew drops that are masquerading as bubbles.  My husband asked me what this card could be used for with that sentiment and I think it would make a great card for someone starting a new chapter in their life - new job, next school level, etc.

Phindy is Having a Party

A Cardinal for Sugar Creek Hollow

Today we have been challenged to make a card using one of two images from Sugar Creek Hollow, this gorgeous cardinal or a primitive sheep.  I chose the cardinal because there are often cardinals in the trees in my neighbourhood during the winter months and winter is fast approaching (it was snowing just north of my home yesterday).  Both images are available at the Sugar Creek Hollow Shoppe.

Christmas at Delightful Challenges

Today we have a new challenge for you at Delightful Challenges called "It is beginning to look like Christmas" and it is perfect for this time of year.  I don't know anyone who doesn't want to get a head start on their Christmas cards even though Halloween hasn't even passed by yet.  I think I am now up to 10 cards so that only leaves 30 or so to go.  I am now debating whether I will save these cards for very special people and just not send any more or to mass produce a bunch for the rest - hmmm.

I am going to issue a disclaimer for this card because I am not happy with the colouring (my apologies to Wendy).  I work with pencil crayons blending them with odorless mineral spirits and for some reason the computer ink is smearing so I had to spray this with a workable fixative and now it looks grainy.  The red on her dress didn't come out as brightly as it usually does even though it will never look as crisp and bright as it would if it were coloured with Copics.  Note to husband -my birthday and Christmas are coming and Copics would make a lovely gift - lol.  It does look better in real life but you aren't here to see that.

Something New from Digital Delights

Digital Delights is pleased to introduce a new line called Delightful Piecings, which are cut files for some of the most popular digital stamps.  These files can be used with a variety of cutting machines or even cut by hand.  All files come with the following formats - ai,eps,dxf, gsd,mtc,pdf,scal,svg and wpc.

Believe

Today, we have been challenged at Sugar Creek Hollow to make a card using the colours Early Espresso (dark brown), River Rock (sand/tan)and Baja Breeze (bluish-green).  I have used two images from the wonderful winter collection at the Sugar Creek Hollow store to make this Christmas card.  While these aren't traditional Christmas colours, I think they are awesome.

I went into Photoshop and changed the colour of this butterfly to come as close as I could to the requested colour.  I think I need to get my monitor calibrated to match the Panetone colour system because it looked good on the screen but didn't print quite as closely.  The brown crinkly ribbon for the double loop bow is just brown seam binding that I hit with my heat gun.  If you want some beautiful hand-dyed crinkly ribbon in a variety of colours, you can find that at the Sugar Creek Hollow store too.

Exciting Challenge News from Whoopsi Daisy

I am doing a quick post this morning to let you know that the challenges at Whoopsi Daisy are going weekly starting November 1st.

Fall Bounty from Sugar Creek Hollow

This week at Sugar Creek Hollow we have been challenged to make a card following this sketch and using any one of the fall or winter stamps.

I loved this basket of mini pumpkins the minute I saw it and couldn't wait to use it with some of my new purchases from England.  The background paper is a linen paper from the Victoria & Albert Museum collection and I almost passed it by but my friend talked me into buying the pack because there are so many gorgeous vintage-look papers.  What I over spent buying the paper, I recouped buying the large rose because my friend took me to her flower supply wholesaler and I got a large package for next to nothing.  Wait until you see some of the other purchases I made there.

This is Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada and I am giving thanks for the bounty of the earth that feeds my wonderful family all of whom I am continually thankful for.  Did you know that all the profits from the sale of digi stamps and other vintage products at the Sugar Creek Hollow store go to feed the hungry in the community of Lynchburg, Virginia?   I feel blessed that I can do my small part to help in that effort so I hope that you will hop over to the store, buy a few of the wonderful stamps and by doing so, you too will be helping.  I just heard on the local radio that the Toronto food bank is in panic mode right now because it is only half way to their monetary and food goal for their Thanksgiving food drive.  I don't live right in Toronto but I will make sure I support the drive in my community when I do the grocery shopping today, especially since we live in a town with a General Motors plant that has been really hard hit by the downturn in the economy.

Too Cute

If you are a fan of the images at Phindy's Place as I am, you will have noticed that Phindy has been drawing a number of what she calls "Cuties" lately so when we were told that challenge this week at the Phindy's Place Challenge Blog was to create a card with something cute, I knew I would have no trouble finding one cute image.  The problem was trying to decide which cute image to use since there are so many.  I finally settled on this fabulous little gal because my granddaughter informed me that she is dressing up as an angel this year for Halloween.

I sure hope you will join us in this challenge because everyone loves something cute and besides Phindy offers some wonderful prizes each week.  You must use a Phindy image  on your card but there are so many cute images in her store, that should not be a problem.  Make sure you go to the challenge blog and check out the inspiration from the rest of the design team - they have done a fabulous job.

This weekend it is Thanksgiving here in Canada and the weatherman is predicting sun for the next 3 days and mild temperatures.  I am yearning for a nice long walk but I have hurt my back and walking around the house hurts like crazy so I don't think I can manage it - boo hoo.  We went a little bit north yesterday afternoon to pick up lamb for the freezer and the fall colours were fabulous on the route we took.  This is such a great time of year!

My Favourite Sassy Cheryl Image

A Sketch at Phindy's

This week we have a sketch for you at Phindy's Place Challenge Blog.  Don't forget that you must use one of Phindy's images on your card but with all the fabulous new images Phindy has created lately, finding one to use should not be difficult.  As always, Phindy has a lovely prize for the random winner and the creator of the top card picked by the design team will be in the running to be a guest designer.

  

I will certainly need to send this card in a box because of the thickness of the "flowers", which are made from a pine cone.  I saw pine cone flowers in a Martha Stewart Living magazine and spent an hour trying to make one of these but it was so tedious taking all the scales off the pine cone and then when I put it back together it didn't look anything like the ones in her magazine.

I am sure I could have made some I was happy with if I had more time but I was trying to get this done before I left on my vacation.  I happened to look outside and saw my neighbour and had an ah-ha moment - he has a bunch of woodworking tools in his garage.  Sure enough, he was able to slice the cone into sections for me and then I shaped the scales and played with some trimming.  I like the way they turned out, even if they are kind of thick.  I added the tops from cloves to the centres so the card even smells good.
