Vellum for Sugar Creek Hollow

It is another Sensational Saturday at Sugar Creek Hollow and this week our challenge to you is to create a card or other paper crafted project featuring VELLUM. We would love to see how you use vellum in your project but remember that we are a vintage, shabby chic or primitive challenge blog so your entry must be in one of those styles.

Our designers have used vellum in a number of ways on their cards so you can see how versatile it can be and be inspired.

I started with gold card stock and then created a gorgeous white vellum poinsettia for my card. It is teamed with a fabulous vintage Santa image, some pretty damask paper and a smart satin bow. It is topped of with a fancy ticket sentiment. I know I have broken my own rule about my Christmas cards being flat this year but flat was getting boring so this one will be a hand it out card. I will go back to flat tomorrow :)

Gingerbread Hugs

 

The challenge this week at Phindy's Place is PAPER PIECING. I am still on a mission to make all my Christmas cards before the end of November and I think this one featuring a little cutie with paper pieced overalls should fit the bill quite nicely. I guess I better get all the completed cards out and take a count so I know how many more I have to do.

I am not sure I should have started this post at lunch time when I am hungry. That gingerbread cookie looks good enough to eat. Pretty soon it will be time for everyone to start their holiday baking. I didn't do any last year and you know we really didn't miss it that much. I do admit though to having the occasional craving for a cookie so perhaps this year I will make one batch of something simple. It definitely won't be our favourite because that would be an invitation to eat too many, too quickly.

Apartment Building

I wanted to make a card for fun this week so I decided to play in Sassy Cheryl's challenge. The challenges are all about pink this month and this one adds a sketch.

Now, I must admit that I am not a fan of sketches because I never seem to be able to do them justice.  I know, I'm weird but I actually find them harder to work with when they should make it easy.  After I finished the card I realized that this will be a great sketch for Christmas cards since they call for clean and simple or you have to float a loan for the postage (remember my story about last year).

Sassy Cheryl draws such fun images and I thought I could use this one for all sorts of occasions. It reminds me of an apartment building for birds. What a great place to hang out.

Colours of Fall

Welcome to another Sensational Saturday at Sugar Creek Hollow. The colours of fall are in full splendour right now but with the cold weather knocking at our door, they won't last too much longer so our challenge at Sugar Creek Hollow this week is to preserve them by making a vintage, shabby chic or primitive card with the COLOURS OF FALL.

Blue Christmas

Christmas is not a time to be blue but a time to be happy, however, the challenge at Phindy's Place this week is called Blue Christmas. We want to see you make Christmas cards with blue as the predominant colour.

Halloween Clown

This is my second Halloween card this week and I have gone from the goulish to the super cute. The challenge at Phindy's Place this week is HALLOWEEN and I love the costume on this little cutie.

You don't have to use a Phindy image but if you want to there are lots of other cute Halloween images in Phindy's store and you get two entries in the challenge. Phindy generously awards two prizes each week - one to a random winner and one to the Design Team's top pick - so that is even more reason to create with a Phindy image.

I am working with only partial mojo this week and am disappointed in the outcome of this card although I must admit it looks better in real life. Since this little person looks cute as a clown, I decided against using any black on my card but the buttons and ribbon are such a vibrant orange that they almost look red in this photo. I think I have to get my husband to work on making me a light tent and with some proper lights maybe my photos will come out with better colour.

I cut some images directly from the collage sheet after I printed it out but because I wanted to resize others I used Photoshop to copy them to a new canvas where I erased the straggly bits that came with them and then saved them as a new picture.  For example I did this with the frame and then added the Happy Halloween text.  I made the tag by pouncing various distress inks and chalk on some card stock after I cut the shape.  I wanted some crinkly ribbon but didn't have the right colour so I took some white organza ribbon, ran it through some Milled Lavender distress ink and then once it was dry, I hit it with my heat gun a few time.  CAUTION:  Do not get to close with the heat gun or the ribbon will burn very easily.

Get Moving

This is the first Friday of the month so that means another ANYTHING GOES WITH A PHINDY IMAGE challenge at Phindy's Place. You can make any kind of card or other paper-crafted project you like as long as you feature one of Phindy's wonderful images. There are lots in the store, so if you don't have one go on over and pick one (or more) up.

Since you must use a Phindy image, you only need to link your project once this week but you have a couple of chances to win. We will choose a random winner and the Design Team will select a Card of the Week. Unlike my husband and daughter, I am not a fan of exercise but I do walk every day so when I saw this image, I knew I had to make my card with it this week. This doesn't really look like me and I am always forgetting to take my music with me but I do use the time to make mental card designs.  There aren't too many people walking past where I walk, which is a good thing because I often talk to myself, especially when I get what I think will be a great idea.  I am sure if anyone heard me saying "Maybe ribbon would look good there" or "I know, I should use pink pearls on that card", they would think I was bonkers :)

Sugar Creek Hollow October Trash to Treasure

Today is another Sensational Saturday at Sugar Creek Hollow and it is also the first of the month so that means it is time for another TRASH TO VINTAGE TREASURE challenge. Your vintage card or other paper-crafted project must start with or include one or more items that you would normally throw away. This does not mean paper scraps in your stash but you can use them in addition to your recycled or re-purposed item. Please make sure you add a photo to your blog post of the throw-away item(s) you have used so we can see how your creativity began.

I have created an ornament for my Christmas tree and it started life as a CD for a scanner that bit the dust a few years ago. I am not sure why we kept the driver CD but I am happy now that we did so I could put it to use. Here is a close-up view of the image on the ornament.

I have a large tree that I decorate with lots of red and gold elements - balls, sparkly picks, poinsettias, etc. I made giant red bows to which I attached three long strands of beads so this ornament should fit in perfectly. If it looks as good as I think it will, I might have to make a few more since I want the tree to look loaded.

Nuts About Fall

Well, I am back from England and I had a lovely time.  We didn't go as many places this time as we usually do when we visit but did manage to spend a fabulous day at Portsmouth touring old warships, took a run to Bakewell to get my special scotch and went to London for a tour of Buckingham Palace and tea at Fortnum and Mason..  I also managed to get some craft shopping in and now just have to figure out how to keep my husband calm when he sees the bills.  It isn't as much the cost of the items but the fact that 1 British pound costs $1.62 Canadian.  That exchange rate is a killer.

On the day in London I met up with Anne Ray, who is Phindy's DT Leader and a friend of my hostess.  You would almost think the four of us had known each other for years because we got along so nicely and had such a lovely day.  Anne is a super lady and I am so glad that we got to meet.

I am exhausted with the time change and the 7 hour flight but should get back to normal by tomorrow - I hope.  I also have to work on losing the 5 pounds that I gained.

Vintage Children

Opposite Colours

This week our challenge to you at Phindy's Place is to use COLOURS THAT ARE OPPOSITE ON THE COLOUR WHEEL. When I searched for Colour Wheel, I found a number of graphics and all of them showed red across from green so that is what I decided to work with. It is perfect for this little cutie on his first day at school.

This is another scheduled post as I am still in England. My husband came home after one week but since I am retired I decided to stay on for another week. If everything went according to plan, yesterday my friend and I went to Buckingham Palace and then out to tea. We were going to meet up with one of her friends and Anne Ray, who is Phindy's Design Team Leader. I will provide details when I return.

Here Comes Christmas

I have another Christmas card made and a good thing too because it is creeping up and faster than I want. It is also a good thing that I made this card because that is the challenge this week at Phindy's Place - CHRISTMAS IS CREEPING UP ON US. I love these Christmas challenges at this time of year because it forces me to get moving and not procrastinate.

You don't have to use a Phindy image but I encourage you to do so because can enter your project twice if you do.  Besides, Phindy has the most fabulous array of images in her store and  they are so versatile.

I loved this paper with its floral stripes and decided it would be more fun than just straight lines.  The letters were cut with my Cricut and I added some tiny pearls to make them look like they were each hanging by the corner.  I have a couple of friends that could use a little cheering up so I will be getting this in the mail to one of them today.

Trash to Vintage Treasure

Welcome to another Sensational Saturday at Sugar Creek Hollow and the first monthly  TRASH TO VINTAGE TREASURE challenge.  We want you to make a project incorporating paper that turns throw-away items into a vintage treasure.

For this challenge, off-cuts or scraps in your craft room do not qualify - you can use them as part of the project but they are not to be considered the throw-away items.  Instead we want you to take everyday items that you would normally throw in the garbage or in your recycling bin and turn them into something fabulous.  This is the time to do your part for the environment and show us how green you can be. By the way, please include photos of your throw-away items before they are transformed in your blog post so we can see what your treasure looked like when it was still trash.

Please remember that we are a vintage challenge blog so your final product must be of a vintage style.

We will be choosing a random winner who will receive a digi of our choice and a winner's badge to display on her blog.  In addition, the Design Team will choose one project as Card of the Week (or shall we say Project of the Week) and the creator will receive a badge to display on her blog and will be in the running for a Guest Designer spot.

For trash items I headed to my recycle bin before it went to the curb for pick-up.  I have used cardboard from the shipping box my husbands new shoes came in to make a panel behind the vintage car.  I peeled the top layer off, cleaned it up and then distressed it with some Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

I used a cake mix box to make the gears, which I cut with my Cricut and then painted.

September Anything Goes with a Phindy Image

August is over and fall is around the corner with school starting in most places - Tuesday where I live.  I know that means summer is at an end but I thought I would make one last summery card.

It is the first Friday in September and that means that the challenge at Phindy's Place is ANYTHING GOES WITH A PHINDY IMAGE. Since you must use a Phindy image on your project, you only need to enter it once.

Phindy generously offers two prizes - a random winner will receive a $5 gift certificate to her store and the Design Team will choose one project as Card of the Week and the creator will also receive a $5 gift certificate to Phindy's store and will be in the running for a Guest designer spot.

A Sassy Bear

This week the challenge at Sassy Cheryl's is to use Lavender, Green and White and I decided to play along because I love this colour combination.

This card was made for Sassy Cheryl to send to a special young man who was paralyzed in a diving accident recently.  My thoughts and prayers go to him and his family as he progresses through a lengthy period of rehabilitation so I thought this little bear might bring some cheer.
